Diversifying my instruction is an ongoing practice that I strive hard to include in all lessons. For this problem-based learning unit, having the diversity is important for all students to contribute and acquire knowledge. Following the framework of UDL aids in the diversification and provides the flexibility for myself and my students.
Although I designated certain technological tools and sites for this unit that is not set is stone. I know that I have students that are auditory learners in addition with students with learning disabilities. I will provide access to videos that will allow them to have access to the same information as their peers. I will also allow students additional options for their presentation. Some do not like to stand in front of an audience so they will be able to create a digital story where they can record their speech and include with their visual piece.
Since all students don’t have access to computers outside of school, I have scheduled time in the computer lab to work on this project. In addition, students will be able to work on the assignment throughout the school day using the student computers in the classroom. Working on the assignment from home, is optional, but in the event a child is absent they will still be able to contribute. I also have students who will prefer to complete the tasks off line. For that reason, I will have hard copies of many of the resources used for them to complete their work as well.
Ultimately, there’s a lot of teacher preparation that is involved with diversification, but it helps focus on what is best for the learners in the classroom and the tools they need to successfully complete the tasks and final assignment.
